Celebrity Vocal Coach - Annabel Williams
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Annabel Williams, Founder of The Vocal Coach, located in London, United Kingdom.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a celebrity vocal coach, including head vocal coach on X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, for the last ten years. I have been fortunate enough to look after artists such as Katy Perry, Amy Winehouse, James Arthur, Little Mix, Sam Ryder, etc.
Tell us about yourself
I've always been a pro singer, sessions, backing vocals, vocal arrangements, etc., and fell into the coaching by accident. It's something I grew to love the harder I worked at it, and seeing the journey my clients went on was the most rewarding feeling, so it prompted me to give more and more of my time to vocal coaching. I genuinely get so much out of it; that's why I ended up setting up my own business, 'The Vocal Coach.'
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I've been so fortunate in my career I probably couldn't pinpoint one moment! Coaching Robbie Williams on 'Angels,' Sam Ryder for Eurovision Song Contest, working with Gloria Gaynor on 'I Will Survive.' The list is long, and I'm hugely lucky! Plus, of course, creating and making the number one selling vocal warm-up app in the world, 'The Vocal Coach'! I never dreamed it would do so well.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The constant need to 'keep up.' There's only me, and I think people think I'm a huge corporation with 50 people working for me! I do work hard to be professional and get back to people straight away, but it means not a lot of time off, and so sometimes I need to close the laptop and say, that can wait until tomorrow! Which is very hard for me to do. But I have to accept I can't do it all!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be realistic - Don't commit to something you can't deliver on.
- Time management - I write literally every movement in my diary, so everything is accounted for.
- Take time off - Otherwise, you'll burn out. You need to rest your brain, so you're on point when you're back working again.
