Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hannah Anders, Founder of The Vocal Academy, located in Nashville, TN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the founder and creator of The Vocal Academy. After almost 15 years of private one-on-one coaching and international touring, I decided to create an online Master Class Program for anyone who wanted to learn how to sing. This program has been designed to walk you through all of the fundamentals of singing, it comes with amazing resources, weekly live group coaching classes with me, and an incredible network of other singers to support you and cheer you along.
I've spoken to a lot of people over the years who have always wanted to take voice lessons or used to and want to get back to it, but they're either lacking in confidence to sing for someone, they're pressed for time or budget, or they don't have easy access to good training. This is where The Vocal Academy comes in. We have found solutions to all of those challenges, and I'm so proud of the incredible work the singers inside the course are doing.
Tell us about yourself
I've been singing my entire life. Literally. I did my undergraduate degree in vocal performance and started my first vocal studio not long after graduation. I've had locations in Nashville and Los Angeles, and now thanks to the beauty of technology, I coach singers all over the world. I've also continued to perform. I was overseas twice this year to tour in addition to the domestic dates I had throughout the summer. I feel like my connection to live performance, and the fact that it is still such a part of my life makes me that much more of an asset to my singers and to the course. I understand what it fundamentally takes.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every time I have a singer who comes to lessons sure that they could never have the voice that they want and watch them realize that they have accomplished the goals they were after and they love the sound of their voice, I feel like I've won the lottery. To know that people trust me with such a vulnerable part of themselves and have been doing so for almost 15 years is a massive accomplishment for me. The Vocal Academy is really a culmination of that accomplishment. To take all of my experience and knowledge and make it accessible to anyone in the world who wants to learn how to sing is such a huge moment for me.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Balance. There's no "clocking out," so you have to know when to walk away and let things breathe so you can come back fresh and able to create and grow with perspective and enthusiasm.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Progress, not perfection.
- The first two years are incredibly hard. Don't expect to make a ton of profit.
- Be stubborn about your goals and flexible about your methods.
