Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Gardiner Upton, owner of The Vegan Gardiners, located in Windsor, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a family-owned and operated plant-based deli, creating meat, cheese, and more alternatives. We make everything from scratch in our kitchen, using no preservatives, additives, or fillers. We welcome everyone, no matter where they are on their dietary journey. This includes the vegan community, lactose-free, health-conscious, and those willing to try something new!

Tell us about yourself

We first began this business because we felt there was a lack of tasty vegan options available commercially, and we decided to make our own. Eventually, our friends and family encouraged us to offer our creations for sale at markets.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We recently opened our storefront in Ford City during a pandemic. We can't quite believe our journey has led all the way to brick and mortar, as we started by doing pop-ups in stores and participating in the local markets.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the most challenging aspects of owning a business is finding a work/life balance. It's so easy to keep working when you love what you have created and want to see it thrive, but one of the reasons you have your own business is to have a good home life. So it's important to find a balance and set boundaries on your time.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find a good support system; no one does it alone. This includes family, friends, and other small business owners to guide you.
  2. Don't rush your growth; build a solid foundation. Knowing the ins and outs of all the aspects of your business is important.
  3. Keep changing it up and make it fun for yourself. Don't let the day-to-day get in the way of why you began creating what you did.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

The best thing about owning a business in Windsor is the community. Both the customers and other small business owners. They make for the best days and truly pick you up on the down ones.
