Write With Power and Precision - The Teachers Way

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in writing and editing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Molly Moynahan, Founder of The Teachers Way, located in Leland, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is coaching writers, creating content, editing, and teaching creative writing. My customers vary from C-Level executives to students applying to college, graduate school, and law school to writers dealing with anxiety and working with those wanting to write novels, memoirs, and essays.

Tell us about yourself

I have had three novels published and am hoping for more. When HarperCollins published my first novel, I was in an MFA program and loved teaching. I continued to teach college, was certified for high school, and taught high school English for years. I started my own company in 2008 with a focus on helping students write their college admission essays. It has grown from there. I love teaching and helping clients express themselves so their voice is as effective as possible.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Actually, one of my clients was just admitted to the Tisch School (NYU), and his mom sent me a lovely note. I'm happy when students write a personal essay that completely represents them. I love editing and helping people's books get born. I am proud of the two handbooks on writing I have written.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I solved the main one, which was dealing with social media, by hiring a brilliant person to manage my website and socials. Staying motivated and finding new business can be challenging since I am a one-person company.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you don't like social media, pay someone to help you!
  2. Be grateful to your clients for trusting you.
  3. Stay teachable and curious.
