Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Cindy Dabrowska, Founder of The Supportive Endo RD, located in Brampton, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an endometriosis-specialized dietitian. I support women who live with endometriosis. The primary goals for most of my clients include the resolution of digestive issues (constipation, diarrhea, reactivity to food, upper gi irritation, bloating), pain, and infertility. My clients range in age from early 20s to 50s.

Tell us about yourself

I am someone who lives with endometriosis, and it's been a huge part of my identity for as long as I can remember. I went from doctor to doctor as a young 12 year trying to figure out what was going wrong in my body. In university, I was put on birth control, and it helped significantly to reduce my pain and improve my quality of life; however, several years later, I started breakthrough bleeding, and my doctor's suggestion was to put me on a higher dose of synthetic hormones. Something about this didn't feel right to me, so I started researching and investigating holistic strategies. In short, the diet has become my management strategy. When I was able to see the massive improvements in my endometriosis symptoms with diet, I wanted to take this info and help other people feel the way I do. That's how I started my practice. I'm motivated each day by the successes I see in my clients. Nutrition truly is an incredibly powerful tool.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I have helped multiple women conceive after years of infertility. Helping someone bring a new life into the world is probably my biggest accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is always being "on." When I used to work my 9-5, nothing about work crept into my personal life after or before hours. As a business owner, I work all hours of the day, and I always have my clients on top of my mind. It's hard to take a vacation or enjoy family time without always having something business related on my mind.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Just start. You'll never start if you're waiting to know EVERYTHING or for the right time. All these things will fall into place, and you'll never stop learning.
  2. Make sure you factor in investments. As a new business owner, you will inevitably get to a point where you need some direction and support in your business. It's important to invest in support to grow.
  3. Map out your calendar and capacity for supporting people early on. Make sure you schedule breaks into your schedule and know exactly how many clients you have the capacity to take on. As tempting as it will be to take on more, if you care about yourself and your mental health, draw those boundaries.
