Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in wellness, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lindsay Lopez, the owner of FORM Pilates in Southern California, USA.
Tell us all about your business...
Hello! I am Lindsay Lopez and I am a success whisperer. I help people thrive in their lives with coaching, movement, and motivation. I work with successful people who need their bodies to come around for the ride in their success. As a former dancer and actress with a successful career in Movies, TV, and Broadway I know the demands of a successful life. I had pain. I had stress. I used these tools not only to heal myself but to THRIVE! I’ve been teaching Pilates for 20+ years and owned my Pilates studio in NYC. By using modalities like Pilates and life coaching; clients move better, think better, and feel better so they can be their best.
Share something about yourself..
If I were a cat, I would have already used at least three of my nine lives! Starting my life as a dancer and actress, I’ve strutted my stuff as a Vegas Showgirl, shook my bootie in a rap video, and ate mountains of burgers for national commercials. Along the way, I found Pilates, or rather it found me. After suffering from chronic pain in my back, someone suggested I try Pilates. I became a professional Pilates instructor in 2001 and had a thriving business in Los Angeles.
A dream job on the Broadway stage brought me to New York City, and lead me to open FORM Pilates Union Square in the heart of Manhattan. I realized that I had a special gift of inspiring people to push through their limitations and become successful in their lives and bodies. Today, I share my passion for movement and mindset with my clients one-on-one virtually or in person at my oasis retreat Casa Lopez in sunny Southern California. As a movement and life coach, I write, and speak, and teach about the power of following your heart.
As a small business owner, what does success ultimately mean to you?
Opening the first-ever cooperative style Pilates studio in NYC.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a solopreneur?
Closing my studio and reinventing myself.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run or grow a small business today?
- Do your research. Just because you have a good idea or someone told you that you should start a business or create a product is NOT enough. Getting real data from your target market and client is priceless to prevent future mistakes.
- Don't do it to make money. Making money from a business is a plus but not a given. Loving what you do has to be the reason you're in this.
- Get help. Spending hours learning to build your website or do your taxes is NOT the best use of your time. Outsourcing is a skill you need to become successful. The general rule is if you can pay someone less than you make in an hour to do something hire it out! Don't have disposable cash? Don't underestimate the power of bartering. I bartered for everything when I started.
If there was one thing you could do repeatedly to help grow your business, what would it be?
Stay in contact with your tribe. Whether it's via social media, an email newsletter, or even personal notes or phone calls. Staying connected to your customers and having personal relationships, keeps them coming back for more!
What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance and to keep it all together?
I maintain a consistent sleep schedule and workout routine of my own. I spend time daily in self-reflection through meditation and journaling.
Who are some of your favorite entrepreneurs and best business resources/books?
Marie Forleo with her no-nonsense approach was the first business coach that I connected with. She shows how to have success as a multi-passionate business owner with her fun videos and live events. Her B-School was my master's in business education.
Angela Jia Kim of Savor Beauty Planner. Angela started her coaching business by allowing entrepreneurs like myself a chance to help each other by brainstorming and masterminding with their peers. She is by far the MOST organized person I know even with multiple businesses. Her Savor Beauty Planner is my key to staying on top of both my business and my self-care.
Amy Porterfield is the master of creating digital courses, webinars, and list building. She breaks down what could be overwhelming and daunting into actionable steps in her courses, webinars, and podcasts. Amy is a must-follow to learn all about digital marketing!
