Tell Empowering Stories - The Story Collective

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Katie Soy, Founder of The Story Collective, located in Gilbert, AZ, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a brand storytelling consultant and coach. I work with corporate teams and entrepreneurs on marketing and messaging strategy, content creation, persuasive copywriting, and telling stories to connect and engage with customers.

Tell us about yourself

With over ten years in corporate marketing and more than a decade as a college communications professor, I love teaching and collaborating. One of my hobbies is creative writing, and brand storytelling encompasses my professional expertise with something I love to do. I first started working in my business when friends requested my help with marketing consulting and copywriting. That evolved into a brand storytelling strategy and persuasive messaging.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I've helped solo-entrepreneurs share personal stories to connect with customers and become bold thought leaders. I've also worked with billion-dollar companies on marketing and messaging strategy. Brand storytelling is such a powerful medium.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Learning the business/CEO side of things is something that was really challenging for me early on. Investing in expertise has been really helpful.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Choose a lane. You can't do everything or be everything to anyone. Niching down feels like you're boxing yourself in, but it's actually one of the best ways to stand out and become known for something.
  2. Choose your audience. So many people (including huge companies) create one piece of content with the hopes of connecting with multiple audiences. This dilutes the power of the message. Speak specifically to ONE audience at a time.
  3. Don't be afraid or ashamed to get help. I have a master's degree, and no one taught me how to do business taxes. Getting the help you need to grow wherever you need it is key.
