Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in music but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Autumn Vaillancourt, an Event Coordinator of The Sound Venue, located in Columbus, IN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Sound is an entertainment and educational center for music, comedy, workshops, teen nights, open mic nights, and galleries. Our company is run by artists, for artists. We have the privilege of connecting with many different artists to share their passion and creativity in a live setting. Whether you're into rock, hip hop, blues, EDM, comedy, poetry, etc., we're bound to have something that will ignite your imagination and create a lasting memory. Our customers are generally individuals aged 18-65 who love live music or are musicians themselves. Our music store, Guitar City and Sound, located right next door, has been incredibly helpful in generating traffic at our new venue.
Tell us about yourself
We are big dreamers, which makes us all the more excited to explore the creative opportunities for The Sound. With so many talented artists, there will be no shortage of magical moments. We live to see artists share their creativity with the world, and we can't wait for everyone to see it!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our venue may not have the massive crowds that large stadium shows bring, but our intimate setting makes the experience all the more memorable. With the help of our small crew and with the support of our community, we've been able to make a lifelong dream of opening a venue come true. Artists are the heart of our culture, and we believe in supporting artists across all genres. The Sound works hard to provide a variety of services to the artists, including consultations, networking, photography, videography, and more. One of our biggest accomplishments has been our partnership with a teen group where we host free concerts for youth and help support the creative expression of these young artists.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is learning how to say "no." It's easy to get excited and a bit overzealous when starting a new business. Every time you say "yes," you are saying "no" to something else.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you.
- Ask a lot of questions.
- Don't give up. Remember: you have to take things one step at a time.
