Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Carlie Wright, Owner of The Social Sundae, located in Bowmanville, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I’m Carlie, owner and Creative Director of The Social Sundae. I’m a commercial photographer specializing in vibrant and colorful product photography. Primarily for the food & beverage, skincare, health, and beauty industry. I service mainly product-based businesses all over Canada and the US and a bit of the EU.

Tell us about yourself

I first started in social media management in 2017. I found that a lot of my clients did not have their own branded photography for their products/services, and they would dare ask me if I could shoot anything. And I have transitioned The Social Sundae over the past six years into a full-product photography studio for print, social media, and other mediums. The one thing that motivates me is the freedom to be creative. I am a content creator at heart, ever since I started blogging in grade 11 in high school. I love the spontaneity of being my own boss and having the creative freedom to create the vision in my mind.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments, I would have to say, is tied between gaining many ideal clients outside the country and getting verified on Pexels. That was super cool.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things about being a business owner is not undercutting yourself & charging what you are worth. Also, the responsibility to educate my clients on the industry and just how much effort goes into a creative photoshoot, lifestyle, or brand.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Three things I would tell somebody that’s looking to start or grow their business today are:

  1. Don’t be afraid to fail - finding your niche and your passion won’t always come immediately.
  2. Patience is key- have a little bit of confidence, even if you like you’re faking it.
  3. Never stop learning. The media, technology, and resources are constantly evolving and changing. Grow with your industry.
