Tell us about yourself
I have been passionate about personal growth for as long as I can remember. I started practicing yoga at age 13 and never looked back. Since then, I have fully immersed myself in the study of wellness on a physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual level. I also draw from many years of profound (and often painful) personal experience. I have recovered from eating disorders, battled anxiety and depression, healed from toxic relationships, overcome codependence and anxious/avoidant attachment, battled chronic illness, and healed childhood trauma. To name a few, I realized that helping other people step into their most empowered selves was something that fulfilled me from the inside out. My 1:1 work in life coaching and holistic therapy has allowed me to witness and take part in some of the most beautiful transformations in the women that I work with. It occurred to me somewhere along the way that these resources often are not accessible or affordable to the majority of people (especially young women). So I wanted to create an in-depth resource that was both affordable and impactful for women who either cannot afford 1:1 support or aren't interested in that path. And that's ultimately what led to the creation of The Self Care Space.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Finding a way to scale my work to reach more people has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done. It's certainly not always easy running a startup, but knowing that I get to make an impact on thousands of lives at a time is a feeling that I wouldn't trade for anything. Ultimately, I spend a lot of time thinking about the lessons, tools, resources, and mentorship that I wish I would have had easy access to in my early 20s. Then I find a way to infuse that into my app. When I hear from the women in our community and get to witness their growth and healing, it's such a surreal thing.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Not knowing for sure if you are making the right choice for your business at the moment. I am a huge advocate for trusting your intuition and relying on outside sources when it makes sense. But ultimately, when you are a business owner, the successes and failures of your company are all on you. Having struggled with perfectionistic tendencies in the past, it's been a huge learning experience for me to realize that there is no such thing as perfect in the business world. There is only taking action and reflecting along the way about what's working and what isn't. Being willing to admit when something that you were really excited about isn't quite working is a valuable skill to gain. Ultimately, resilience and adaptability are the names of the game!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Choose something that fascinates you. When you are excited to learn more about your product or service, your market, your ideal customer, and everything that goes into creating a successful business, it will make the hardships much more palatable. Late nights and frustrating setbacks feel worth it when you have a strong connection to what you do. It doesn't necessarily need to be your life's greatest passion, but choosing something that intrigues and fascinates you will go a long way.
- Only compare for inspiration, not self-criticism. It can be immensely valuable to look to what other people are doing to inspire your own creativity and to celebrate their massive success as a signal that it is possible for you too. But when you begin to catch yourself in the trap of comparison, shame, and self-criticism, it's time to stop looking outward and start looking inward. You are the only one who can bring your uniqueness to the table in your business. Don't allow the noise around you to distract you from your goals and your daily actions.
- Take care of your mental health along the way. I wouldn't be a good therapist and life coach if I didn't advise you to incorporate self-care into your business growth strategy. I don't know a single entrepreneur out there who hasn't run themselves a little too ragged and experienced the dreaded "burnout" in the process. I myself have been there too. Working 7 days a week, 16+ hour days, with no work-life balance is not sustainable. It may seem appealing like it will get you there faster, but I promise it is just a recipe for disaster. Incorporate practices like meditation, breath work, taking screen-free days, proper sleep hygiene, scheduling mini-vacations, and nourishing your body well. These things are vital to the success of your business because they are vital to your overall wellbeing and stamina long-term.
