Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Stuart Pearce, Founder of The Sales Trainer, located in Clevedon, North Somerset, England.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The business is called The Sales Trainer, and that's exactly what we do. We train and coach those whose first choice of things is not sales and help them to overcome their fears and actually become able to sell but in a way that suits them.

Tell us about yourself

I fell into sales training purely by accident; it was something I just did with the sales teams I managed and then it became all I did. What motivates me is even after many years of doing it, I still absolutely love what I do. I've been lucky enough to train people across the globe, and if I could, I would do it for free (but that upsets my accountant!) There's a moment when you're training/coaching someone when it finally clicks into place for them, the light goes on, and then 'get it,' from then on, they're just flying. That's why I do what I do.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

To write and publish three books, to have been asked many times to speak at events, on radio shows, etc. To have actually thrived through some difficult times. To have built a reputation that allows me to do all the things that I get to do and to have my son use what he learns by being around me to get offered every job he interviews for!

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Doing the necessary things to keep the business going that aren't the thing you love (I love training and coaching, but I'm not the biggest fan of admin!)

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Pay attention to the basics (or outsource them to someone else)
  2. Do something every day that improves your business (and brings you enquiries)
  3. Learn how to sell (it doesn't matter what your business does if you can't sell, it all falls apart)
