Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and fitness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Pam Cupak, owner of The Root Studio, located in Perth, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Root Studio is a movement studio focused on community, postpartum rehabilitation, bringing yoga and release work to all, and effective fitness. All are welcome; however, my deepest passion is supporting moms.
Tell us about yourself
I realized quickly that sitting at my desk all day wouldn't work for me long-term. It took more than a few years and a couple of kids for me to find the nerve to follow my passion all the way. I have been teaching fitness and personal training since 2009, offering postpartum programs since 2011, partnered with Andrea Picket Physiotherapy to offer CORE+Floor - deep core and pelvic floor rehabilitation programs in 2017, and have offered an original take on Yoga since 2018.
I LOVE my "job," and it is easy to show up, but what keeps me burning bright is when I know that people leave feeling better than when they walked in.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is opening the studio this past September 2021. Yep in the middle of it all and still being around after the last two years to do it! I have amazing clients.
Aside from that, I am truly proud that my clients feel welcome and safe in the space. They know they can truly come as they are, no matter what life is handing them at that time. We are there together to support one another through class, hardship, and celebration. I absolutely love working with my clients and celebrating their wins. I have done my duty when they leave feeling better than they came.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Instability. I have improved in not over-stressing about the lack of control. I keep learning, working, improving, creating, and moving; it bridges the gaps, and everything comes to be what it should be.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start: Love it. Find something you care deeply about. It keeps you motivated and pushes you through what can be a long start.
- Run: Organization, a strong team (even if you are on your own, you still need good people around you).
- Grow: Practice, learn, create, LISTEN. Life is always changing, and you need to be there, in the now, that is how you stay relevant; that is how you grow.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
If you are not happy with what you are doing every day, you need to make a change. It is a long life if every day hurts. Mondays are my favourite. If you have ever been to my Monday classes, you know I am not lying! Find a way to make Monday the best day.
