Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lamia Mrabet, Owner of The Queen of Spice LLC, located in Bedford, MA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our specialty food company offers a range of Moroccan/Mediterranean spice mixes and other specialty food products, including Moroccan spiced tea, couscous, and more. Our customers include individuals who are interested in exploring new and unique flavors and those who are passionate about cooking and looking for high-quality ingredients to enhance their meals. We also cater to specialty food stores and restaurants looking to offer their customers unique and authentic flavors.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business out of a passion for cooking and a desire to share the unique and vibrant flavors of Moroccan and Mediterranean cuisine with others. Growing up in Morocco, I was surrounded by the rich aromas and flavors of spices, and I developed a deep appreciation for the culinary traditions of my culture. After moving to the United States, I realized that there was a growing interest in global cuisine and a desire for high-quality, authentic ingredients. With this in mind, I decided to launch my own specialty food business.

What motivates me each day is the opportunity to share my love of Moroccan cuisine with others and introduce them to new and exciting flavors. I am inspired by the positive feedback I receive from customers who appreciate the quality and authenticity of our products, and I am driven to continue exploring new flavors and expanding our product line. Knowing that I am making a difference in people's lives by introducing them to new culinary experiences is incredibly rewarding and keeps me motivated to push forward and grow my business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of our biggest achievements is having the courage to pursue our passion for Moroccan spice mixes and turning it into a thriving business. Despite not having any prior experience in the food industry, we were able to share our knowledge and introduce new customers to the wonderful world of spices. Our ability to educate and inspire customers who were not accustomed to using spices is a testament to our passion and dedication. We have not only built a business but have also enriched the lives of our customers by introducing them to new flavors and culinary experiences.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, it is common to face numerous challenges, and one of the most significant can be juggling multiple roles simultaneously. One of the hardest things I have faced as a business owner is managing all aspects of the business on my own. This means taking on multiple roles such as CEO, worker, marketer, driver, and more. Each role requires different skill sets and responsibilities, which can be overwhelming at times. It can be difficult to prioritize tasks and make strategic decisions when there are so many responsibilities to manage. Additionally, taking on all these roles can lead to burnout and affect the overall success of the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Follow your passion: Starting and growing a business can be challenging, so it's essential to have a passion for what you're doing. Pursue a business that you're passionate about, and it will motivate you to overcome obstacles and remain committed to your goals.
  2. Seek knowledge and learn from mistakes: Starting a business requires continuous learning and adapting to new situations. Seek advice and mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs, and learn from your mistakes along the way. Identify your weaknesses and find ways to improve your skills.
  3. Focus on the big picture and delegate tasks: As a business owner, it's easy to get caught up in the day-to-day tasks and lose sight of the big picture. Focus on your long-term goals and delegate tasks to others when possible. This will enable you to focus on the areas where you can add the most value to your business and ensure that you are using your time effectively.
