Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Nadine Dionne, Founder of The Pursuit of Tidy, located in Winnipeg, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Pursuit of Tidy is a professional organizing business where I coach busy moms with their home decluttering and organizing needs. Through virtual meets, I provide my clients with motivation, accountability, and professional organizing guidance. Clients go from being overwhelmed by the cluttered chaos in their homes to loving being in their spaces again.
Tell us about yourself
I actually wanted to start a similar business 20 years ago, but I’m happy the stars didn’t align then. Through my own struggles with becoming a mom in my late 30s and having a career, I came to fully understand how clutter can quickly take over your home and mental and emotional health. It was through my own journey of finding a consistent way to take control of my clutter that The Pursuit of Tidy was created. I want other moms to finally love their homes again and feel the freedom of not being bogged down by clutter.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I’ve learned to quiet my ego and ask for advice whenever I’m at a crossroads. I still have my full-time career outside of The Pursuit of Tidy, so I don’t have a lot of time to be indecisive. Learning how to find the right help and asking for it is growing my business faster than I could on my own.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Having the drive and dedication to continue forward when things aren’t moving as quickly as I’d like has been difficult. However, this struggle has allowed me to develop a lot of patience, improve my time management skills and develop productive habits.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My top 3 tips for someone starting a business as a side hustle are:
- Research your idea before you start. If your business is a side hustle, you likely have less time to work on it. Understanding if your business idea is viable or not can save you time and energy down the road.
- Seek good advice. I suggest interviewing the owner of a successful business that you’d like to model and asking them how they started their business and what they would do differently now. I received valuable advice specific to my industry by doing this.
- Accept that a side hustle can take longer to grow.
