The Experience Ecosystem™ - The Purpose Partners

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kathleen Wolf, Founder and CEO of The Purpose Partners, located in St. Joseph, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We help organizations be THE company that people want to work for and evangelize to others. Our proven consulting framework, called The Experience Ecosystem™, is based on years of research and produces lasting results that positively impact our client's revenues.

Tell us about yourself

After spending 25 years at a Fortune 250 company, I wanted to help forward-thinking companies create compelling experiences for their employees and customers. I'm motivated by the fact that companies that do good for others do well themselves. When you treat your employees well, they treat your customers well. It's a virtuous cycle, yet some organizations are stuck in the past, using woefully old practices in their employee and customer interactions. Purpose is not a fad; it's a proven way of doing business. Your EVP (employee value proposition) better be well thought out if you want to compete for talent. We help our clients think about the full business ecosystem and then implement the most critical pieces as their time or budget allows.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I'm thrilled to say that I've been in business for six years, helping a variety of clients in both the for-profit and nonprofit spaces. It's hard to select one biggest accomplishment when each little win helps our clients be more successful.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the biggest challenges of being a business owner is deciding who are the right clients. We are selective in who we work with because we're intentionally small and want to ensure that we deliver more value to our clients than what they pay for. We look to build relationships with our clients rather than work on projects, so making sure our values align with our prospective clients is an important part of the front end of any engagement.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. As a Gallup Certified Strengths Coach, my first tip to anyone looking to become an entrepreneur is to know your strengths. You can't do everything well, so knowing your strengths allows you to understand where to put your time and where you should hire others to fill the gaps.
  2. Get clear on your purpose for being in business - and no, it's not just making money. Spend time understanding why you really want to be in business and who you will serve. A clear purpose will become your compass for decision-making and provide guardrails that keep you focused.
  3. Build a solid, personal board of directors comprised of people you trust but who will also be honest with you. Bounce ideas off of this group and listen to their suggestions. Their support will help you personally and professionally.
