There's an Art to Art - The Pigeon Letters

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Peggy Dean, owner of The Pigeon Letters, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Pigeon Letters is an accessible creative platform for visual artists offering education, professional-grade cruelty-free art supplies, and entrepreneur resources for people who want to take their art to the next level.

Tell us about yourself

As a self-taught artist born into creativity through a struggle with mental health, I promote embracing imperfections and living out loud. I have a soft spot for ensuring that anyone with a passion feels empowered to be able to create.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I find success in seeing my community grow. Being a source to bridge the gaps with industry knowledge is my favorite thing in the world. My clients have moved on to publish books, teach courses, and license their artwork with reputable national brands.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest for me is easily prioritizing. I have big ideas every single day, and I love impulsively jumping into all of them. I have to remember that I have to exercise restraint, haha.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Commit. You can find guidance, tips, resources, everything. It's all available if you keep researching and learning. HOWEVER - nobody will do the work for you. It's a LOT of work, but if you trust the process and accept the ebbs and flows, the energy you put in will inevitably reward you tenfold. Follow your gut instincts and commit to the process.
