Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Sarah Norris, Director of The Physiotherapy Centre, located in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a business dedicated to health, fitness, and well-being. We have such a diverse mixture of clients attending our centers ranging from new mums wanting to have a postnatal physical assessment to runners attending with running injuries. We also have pilates and yoga studios, so we have clients attending for fitness and not just rehab purposes.

Tell us about yourself

I started my business in 2007. I moved from the NHS into the private sector, where I was free to develop new services and create opportunities without the red tape of a huge organisation and lack of resources. I create my own opportunities, spot gaps in the market, and develop my workforce, and it is all driven by wanting to offer quality health and fitness services within a safe, supportive environment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Purchasing my own business premises (x 2). Providing services from owner-occupied premises was always in the business plan, but the second purchase was fuelled by the pandemic. We nearly lost our second business, but we are coming out the other side with our own newly refurbed premised.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

People management. I love working with people and seeing them develop and progress, and I also love learning from them. But working with people also means working with lots of different personalities and challenges. Getting the best out of my team is down to me as a leader, and I have always found this one of the most rewarding yet challenging roles.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stop talking, dreaming, and thinking about it. The sooner you start, the better. It is never going to get easier; it actually gets harder the longer you leave it. There is no time like the present.
  2. Trust your gut. Learning to trust your intuition is paramount to success.
  3. Surround yourself with inspirational, entrepreneurial individuals who ooze positivity. Find the right energy. The people you spend the most time with shape who you are. Growing a business means stepping out of your comfort zone and taking risks; you need to find your tribe.
