Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Surabhi Veitch, Owner of The Passionate Physio, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I run a virtual physiotherapy and fitness coaching business helping moms get strong and manage symptoms. My pregnant and postpartum clients may experience pelvic floor concerns, like leaks or prolapse, and are dealing with core and pelvic floor weakness. They want to be active and get back to fitness, exercise, and sport.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a physiotherapist, prenatal/postnatal fitness coach, and a mom of 2. When I had my first child, I had no idea how hard it would be to recover physically. I was athletic, fit, and healthy before having babies. Everyone told me I would bounce right back, but that's not what happened. I was barely getting any sleep, was constantly overwhelmed, and had postpartum core and pelvic floor symptoms that left me feeling weak. Despite diligently doing my Pelvic Physiotherapy exercises, I was still left unable to lift, carry, run or jump without symptoms. I felt lost, discouraged, and disappointed.
Despite being a physiotherapist myself for almost a decade, I realized we were never taught anything about the pelvic floor! I saw that pelvic physiotherapists often missed treating the person instead of just the pelvis. So I went on to learn everything I could about pregnancy, postpartum, and return to exercise.
It was the start of the pandemic when I had my second child. I saw how many moms were struggling unsupported. I wanted to make getting help as accessible as I could, so I started seeing clients virtually. And I realized how incredible virtual appointments were for moms. They could get help without ever having to bundle up their baby in a car seat or needing to leave their home. Moms could learn how to incorporate movement and self-care within their days and get the timely help they need. What motivates me is seeing moms get confident, gain trust in their bodies again, and feel so surprised by how strong they really are.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
That I run my business in a way that is authentic to me and my values and a business that centres the humanity of my clients and myself. I am proud of myself for supporting moms, who are often left to figure everything out for themselves. Mothers are the leaders of our communities and households. A happier mom equals a happier baby and family.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Building a business is a learning curve and takes a while. It takes being consistent and showing up over a long period of time. You have to be willing to put in the hard work and long hours while maintaining your mental health and well-being. Don't be afraid to try new things, knowing that you can always change your mind later.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Get clear on why you're starting a business and what you value. Keep your eyes on your own journey rather than comparing it to anyone else.
- Join a community of business owners to lean on, so you can run ideas by each other and also so you don't feel like you're going through entrepreneurship alone.
- Build relationships and communicate well. Even if you have only one customer, don't take them for granted. Treat them well!
