Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Ernestine Brown, Founder of The Old Town Soap Company, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Old Town Soap Company is a Black Owned, Woman Owned & Veteran Owned and Operated company located in San Diego, California. We provide direct support to health-conscious consumers and other businesses as it pertains to personal care & wellness.

Tell us about yourself

I originally used the art of soapmaking as a form of psychological therapy while serving on active duty in the military. Upon realizing the powerful effects of my all-natural skincare products and the mental and emotional stability that crafting provides, I decided to share it with the world through my robust brick-and-mortar retail store while simultaneously teaching live therapeutic workshops such as "Soapmaking for Therapy" at prominent destination Liberty Station, San Diego, California.

In keeping with my vision, I am laser focused on being a valuable leader in the personal care & wellness industry as well as being an equally valuable resource to underserved communities and other entrepreneurs through my business mentorship, which encourages personal & professional growth while making a difference. I also love building quality relationships with the public and establishing meaningful partnerships with other businesses and organizations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is when I recently got accepted into a very competitive Business Accelerator by Goldman Sachs.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balancing my extreme drive for entrepreneurship and my personal life (relationships, leisure, etc.) is one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do not be afraid to step out on faith.
  2. You will learn what you need along the way.
  3. The only way to "eat an elephant" is one bite at a time so take time to enjoy the journey.
