Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Trang Robinson, Founder of The Nutritious PharmD, located in Berkeley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Nutritious PharmD is a private practice that provides Nutrition and Wellness Coaching by me, I am a Master Certified Nutrition and Wellness Coach and Pharmacist. The clients that I serve are mainly women who struggle with Emotional Eating due to stress, anxiety, and depression and, as a result, have unwanted weight gain. I guide my clients through a journey of self-discovery to empower them to make different choices, regain a sense of control and step into a healthier, more accepting, and happier version of the amazing person they already are!

Tell us about yourself

I was a pharmacist for 20 years. In those 20 years, I served people who were already sick and taking multiple medications for their illnesses. When I embarked on my journey of stepping into a healthier, happier version of myself, I discovered that unhealthy eating patterns and behaviors were caused by emotions, feelings, and thoughts that drive actions. I worked on myself and considered myself an experiment every day in shifting my mindset, cultivating mindfulness, and making choices that better serve me, my people, and the world I exist in. I know others who struggle with the same challenges when it comes to creating a balanced life and a healthy relationship with food, and I know I can help them in a way that feels meaningful to them.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is starting something from nothing. I started my private practice nutrition counseling business without a business loan, and DIY'd everything myself. I taught myself how to start a small business from scratch and reached out for help when I didn't know what to do. In the first year, my goal was to break even, and I ended up with a small amount of profit. In my second year, my goal is to reinvest my earnings into my business, that is, into myself to keep growing, learning, and expanding so that I can provide the best service and experience to my clients.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is "Showing Up," even on days when you don't feel motivated to do so. Even on days when you have self-doubt or insecurities, you have to show up and keep putting one step in front of the other and doing the work. Being vulnerable and opening oneself up to criticism and judgment is also very difficult to face every day. But my passion and belief in the work and healing I can provide outweigh the difficulties, and I do it anyway!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Find out where your passion intersects with the world's needs. Get clear about your mission and values.
  2. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
  3. Ask for help if you don't know how to do something.
