Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Bonnie Campbell, Founder of The Nourished Path, located in Shoreline, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We help women lose weight without giving up their favorite foods with our Sustainable Macro System. A lot of the current methods of weight loss involve eliminating whole food groups, which just isn't realistic or practical to continue long-term. So with our online nutrition coaching, we provide guidance and accountability to help women lose weight and then keep it off afterward instead of yo-yo dieting.
Tell us about yourself
I'm a Registered Dietitian (RD) with my master's in nutrition from Bastyr University, but originally I went to school at Illinois State University to be a math teacher. It turns out that my calling is to help people in other ways - improving lives through nutrition without using fad diets or cutting out whole food groups! I used to work in a hospital, but I realized if I could have worked with my patients 30 years ago, we could have prevented their issues at the beginning and helped them live longer, healthier, and happier lives! I started The Nourished Path in Seattle in the spring of 2020. Great timing - I know! The world was falling to pieces around me and everyone I loved. And I wanted to be there to support them in the best way I knew how: by helping them feel their best and keep their health in the forefront. It's so easy to get lost in the day-to-day and let health issues snowball. By starting my own business, I was able to give more personal and deeper service to create the most change.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Growing my team, it's been such a blessing to be able to mentor them and watch them grow as people and as professionals.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Determining what the best things to focus on are and not being tempted by all the shiny objects out there. It's so easy to spend a ton of time on a project that won't move the needle forward. It's usually the simple, basic stuff that makes the difference.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- When I started nutrition coaching, I worked for a larger company for a few years. This gave me a stable income, a way to hone my skills, and also expanded my network.
- Use "good enough" to push through. Nothing needs to, or can be, perfect on the first pass. Then see what's sticking and refine those things over time.
- Networking and connections are a slow game. Don't expect results overnight, but those connections are the lifeblood of your future.
