Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Marty Hurwitz, CEO & Founder of THE MVEye, located in Austin, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
THE MVEye provides market research and strategic consulting for the global gem, jewelry, and watch industries. Our customers are mining companies, manufacturers, retailers, trade associations, financial institutions, and sovereign nations.
Tell us about yourself
I was a 3rd generation jewelry retailer and identified a niche that the jewelry industry needed to address as consumer demographics changed- a better understanding of what the consumer's voice is. Our guiding principles and those we try to impart to our clients are: The most important part of the equation is the consumer. Nothing sells in jewelry until it sells at retail. Retail is never going to be the same again. The consumer is changing everything. The consumer's voice is the only one that counts.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We have worked on several major international research and marketing initiatives in the global gem, jewelry, and watch industries, including:
- Research and development of the Champagne Diamond marketing campaign
- Creation and implementation of the Indo-Argyle Diamond Council
- Due diligence research to support several major brand sales and acquisitions
- Annual research that helped introduce the lab-grown diamond category to the trade and consumer
- Development of the Jewelry Consumer Opinion Council
- Creation and distribution of weekly THE MVEye Lab-Grown Diamond Market Intel Report
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Prioritizing a positive work-life balance is so important and is required for both personal health and business success. It's easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day work of a business and forget about the moment, the "now" of your life. It's important to separate the story of your business from who you really are. The latter is so much bigger and more important.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't try to solve all of the risks before jumping in and getting started.
- Experience is the world's greatest teacher.
- Learn to love mistakes, failures, and rejections. If you hit 3 out of 10 you're in the hall of fame.
