Tell us about yourself

Having over 30 years of collective experience in traditional and holistic mental health, philanthropy, the justice system, and Information Technology, Lorenzo Young and I recognized a need for high-quality, client-focused, culturally competent, and community-based mental health and social services in Los Angeles County.

With nearly 11 million residents, we sought to answer the calling to provide a timely, accessible, and convenient next-generation behavioral health and lifestyle service delivery system in an effort to blend our expertise and eliminate the mental health disparities and charitably address underserved populations, including Transitional Age Youths (18-25 yrs), as well as Re-Entry and pre-filing Diversion candidates through evidence-based holistic mental health and social services in conjunction with advanced technologies and innovative, sustainable, and scalable strategies.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a new organization, our biggest accomplishment consists of building and maintaining grassroots awareness of and participation in our programs in our communities. We’ve gotten amazing feedback, and we continue to generate interest and partnership inquiries, which may lead to our work leaving a bigger impact than we originally thought possible.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The most difficult thing is staying the course and not becoming distracted by life’s obstacles. Maintaining our faith in God and our commitment to each other as a family and team has truly been and will continue to be our organization’s saving grace.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make a Plan. Regardless of the stage you’re in, get a journal and dump all of your thoughts there. Even if the thoughts are just unorganized ideas, write them down. You want to get them out of your head so that you will have space to generate more ideas. Once you have substantial information in your journal, start reviewing it, and you will see a plan beginning to emerge.
  2. Get a partner/build a team. Successful businesses are built and operated by teams. No one makes it far alone. Get a partner or a few whom you trust and share and collaborate with them on the ideas you jotted down in your journal. Allow space and opportunity for ideas to grow and flourish.
  3. Take (calculated) risks. You have your plan and your team, so now, put your faith and hard work to the test. Set out to tackle one of your team’s goals. Weigh the risks against the potential rewards and take action. Don’t forget to assess your progress along the way.
