Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angie Isaacs, Founder of The Mane Solution, located in Milton, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Mane Solution is a Clinical Salon that specializes in tightly curly, coiled, and kinky hair types. I provide hair care services and education to those who are having trouble maintaining their afro-textured hair and want to learn how to properly care for it.
Tell us about yourself
My business started when I was having a hard time with my hair. No matter what I did to it, it never seemed to get healthy, and it made me very insecure. I was fed up, and I went to YouTube to try and find new ways to style my hair so that I could feel better about it. The information I came up with helped me see that my hair texture was different from straighter hair types, and it needs to be cared for in a particular way to preserve it and maintain length. Once I started to apply what I had learned to my own hair, my hair began to flourish and became the longest and the healthiest it had ever been.
My healthy hair journey helped me develop more confidence in myself, and I just knew I wanted to help others who were also struggling with their hair. I went on to become a Trichologist (hair loss and scalp conditions) that specializes in afro-textured hair types. I am very passionate about what I do, and I am motivated every day to help individuals gain the confidence they need to change their lives, all just through their hair.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is the look on a client's face when I show them that their afro-textured hair is beautiful and can flourish. Encouraging them and watching them revel in the thoughts of the different possibilities they would never have imagined is the ultimate payoff, and that's why I love what I do.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me was realizing that there is much more that comes with running a business, and just being passionate about what you're doing isn't enough to be successful. There is a lot to learn and responsibilities that must be met consistently to keep the business afloat, and it all falls on you. If you truly desire to be a business owner, you will find a way, and you will overcome any hurdles that may come across your path.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't be scared to start - If you have a good idea, make a plan and put it into motion.
- Respect the process - Great things take time to build, so go with the flow.
- Don't give up - Things won't always go your way but stay focused; tomorrow is always a new day.
