Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Connor McAndrew, founder of The Loyal Butcher Co., located in Kitchener, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Loyal Butcher Co. supplies raw dog food and creates custom monthly meal plans. We work with each member to improve overall health. The company was inspired by an Italian Cane Corso named Dante. After having multiple issues with eating kibble a switch was made to a raw-based diet to improve his health and has never looked back. The issues went away and his quality of life improved significantly. For those who are looking for an alternative for their dog because of health issues or to improve their dog's health, we are here to help.

Tell us about yourself

Since I was a little kid I had always felt a connection with dogs. As I got older and job/career paths were starting to be evaluated, there was a desire to be around dogs and have an impact on their lives. In high school, I had started offering dog training/walking to pet owners on top of my other jobs I had (one of which was at a dog daycare). After having tried out different jobs, going through college, and then starting a career in finance, I still had this desire to be around dogs. It was the one constant in my work experiences that I enjoyed.

While in college I was blessed with my first dog Dante. He was having skin issues, digestive issues and the different food suggestions weren't working. After doing research and talking to other experienced raw feeders/holistic vets we took the leap into feeding a raw-based diet. His issues went away and haven't looked back since. Dante's life has improved significantly from the change in his nutrition so I wanted to share the experience with other pet owners. This leads me to start up The Loyal Butcher Co. and has been the motivating force why we are still around to this day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Helping dogs live a healthier lifestyle.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Everything lands on the business owner at the end of the day. You are responsible for all aspects of the business so you have to hold yourself accountable and to a high standard always. Wearing all the hats can be draining but having a good team/support helps with those needs.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

1. It's a 24/7 commitment, so do what you love.

2. Try and test new marketing strategies. Find what works and do more of that.

3. Customer care is paramount.
