Bring in More Customers, Increase Revenue - The Local Marketer
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in marketing services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Roberto Torres, Owner of The Local Marketer, located in Ware, MA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We provide online marketing apps and services to local businesses in order for them to grow and impact the communities they serve. This includes services like Web Design, Search Engine Optimization, and Digital Advertising. Our customers include local business owners, internal marketing teams, and other marketing agencies.
Tell us about yourself
How it started back in 2015-2016 when a local plumbing business owner, who knew I worked in IT, asked about building them a website. I took on the project and began offering that to more businesses. The side gig turned full-time in 2019, and here we are today! What motivates me each day is knowing that we help local businesses grow. We know that when local independent businesses grow and thrive, 50% of every dollar spent in those businesses remains in the community. Not only does this provide local jobs, but it also impacts local services, municipal revenue, and local non-profits who rely on their community.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Overall, just being able to provide for my family and for the families of my customers by helping their businesses grow.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things is knowing where your weaknesses are and asking for help. As a business owner, you can't do everything well. It's hard to give up the bookkeeping, the marketing, or the design work to others who know it better. One of the hardest lessons to learn is instead of working IN your business, learn to work ON your business by hiring help where you are NOT the expert.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Know your unique value proposition: What is your product/service, and why should anyone buy it?
- Know your audience well: Don't assume you know them; get to know them.
- Don't be a perfectionist: You'll never succeed if everything has to be perfect. Everything can be improved upon, so just get started and then iterate to get better.
