Empowering Women - The Ladder Coach
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jennifer Chabot, founder of The Ladder Coach, located in Edmonton, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My company is The Ladder Coach. We focus on leadership and mentorship to empower women who want to become leaders to either climb the corporate ladder or 'own the ladder' by becoming an entrepreneur. When I was beginning my career, I didn't realize that there were fundamental skills and business knowledge that I needed to develop or learn. Once I did, the sky was the limit.
Tell us about yourself
I had tried a few other businesses in the past. What I realized was that I was great with people, and I loved helping others develop themselves. I decided to focus on how I could teach others to do what I have done - learn how to become a leader, whether they work for someone else or own a business. Developing fundamental business skills and understanding the basics of how to run a business is crucial for anyone who wants to succeed within an organization. There is so much information available about leadership and business; however, I help others not only learn these skills and knowledge but how to apply them. The world of business is always changing, and leaders need to be able to adapt. I help others learn how to be adaptable by anticipating issues and understanding where to go for assistance. Whether they should go through a resource such as a mentor, a colleague in their community, or reference an online business resource. We are building a community, which is fantastic. Helping others is what drives me.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is persevering and pushing forward, even when facing personal challenges. Finding the strength and drive to meet the demands of the business and achieve goals when it seems like you just have so much to balance between your personal life and your career/business. For me, I see a challenge. I find the strength to push forward. These last two years, during the pandemic, I continued to learn, strategize, and grow. Because of this, I have achieved some amazing results despite going through some very big personal challenges at the same time.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Finding other driven women to connect with. It can be difficult to find someone else who understands the frustrations and challenges you face. Connecting with other business owners and being able to discuss some of those challenges is very helpful. Our community helps each other. It's a great place for our clients to connect and support each other.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Always follow a strategic plan. Be innovative and adaptable. Find a community you can learn from and lean on when you need support.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I think it's important to remember that everything in life is temporary. A career is an overall goal. Every job is, after all, just a job. Learn what you can from every position and every organization. What skills or knowledge can you learn while you are in that position? Be strategic and choose positions and organizations that help you learn and grow. Then, you can use those skills to move toward your personal goals for your career.
