Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessi Holden, Founder of The Kitchen Invitation, located in Muskegon, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a registered dietitian focusing on culinary nutrition to improve the way we cook and experience foods in our kitchen. I focus on helping families learn meal planning skills, improve food budgeting, cooking techniques, and so much more. I have a strong emphasis on being anti-diet and helping those recover from diet culture and the joy it robs us of in the kitchen.

Tell us about yourself

I've been a registered dietitian since 2013, and my first job was teaching cooking classes in my local community. To take my skills from my education and teach them in such a hands-on way inspired me to keep this a part of my career. I also know the harmful effects of dieting/diet culture and the work it takes to relearn food and cooking without the influence of dieting. I have achieved my own food freedom in the kitchen, and I want that for others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Seeing people take on livable, doable, and fun ideas in the kitchen is the best reward. Whether they feel free to incorporate pasta back into their life, have learned to cook vegetables, or feel a breath of fresh air when told they don't need to restrict foods any longer. These are all the most rewarding concepts I see my clients complete.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Comparison syndrome is very real! I can often get stuck comparing where my business is to someone else's simply based on social media feed/followers. I'm learning to ignore this more and to stay true to myself and my community.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Get organized and keep track of things well.
  2. Find a group of like-minded individuals you can talk to, bounce ideas off of, etc.
  3. Know that you are where you are, and that is okay.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I offer more than just one on one services because I know cost can be a major factor when seeking help. I have free podcasts, youtube videos, and an affordable ($10/mo) online community over at Patreon.
