Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Heather Metcalfe, Founder of The Islay Wellness Academy, located in Dundee, Scotland, United Kingdom.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide essential life skills, core business skills, and universal energy training to young adults aged between 16 and 25.

Tell us about yourself

I had a major global corporate career running businesses all over the world and turning around companies large and small on the brink of financial disaster. I left all of this behind 2 years ago to follow my heart's calling to share my skills with our younger generation, filling the gaps in their core knowledge that school education doesn't cover about how to survive and thrive in this world. After a period of creating and researching energy in particular, I am now just starting to launch my products into the world, starting with my first eBook and bonus content, Why Money Confidence Matters, soon to be followed by a unique and game-changing course called The Islay Diet, Why Diet's Fail and How to Solve the Obesity Challenge.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Finding the courage to find my voice on video and podcasts. As a business leader, I could stand up in front of hundreds of employees knowing that their welfare was in my hands to help and support them, but not seeing the faces of the people who need my help, just a camera or microphone has been an unexpectedly daunting emotional hurdle to overcome.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Loneliness and sniffing out and placing clear but kind boundaries to keep away the people who want to be around to feed off your energy for their own gain versus the people who want to be around you because they love what you do and want to be a part of the drive to help others.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Believe in yourself; the world needs your voice. Lots of people will not get what you want to do and might even try to talk you out of it because your drive makes them feel uncomfortable about their lack of drive, so you have to be your own biggest cheerleader, supporter, mentor, and counsel.
  2. Find unconditional love for yourself and what you are trying to do. It attracts people to you who need you and gives you the strength to keep away those who do not.
  3. Find a creative hobby and favourite exercise outside that both keeps you away from your work and set aside lots of time for them; being in creative flow and nature both help your intuitive ideas to surface and develop. This isn't just about relaxing; this is a fundamental part of being able to be successful.
