Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Chris Majer, Founder of The Human Potential Project, located in Seattle, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Human Potential Project and our related companies are in the business of personal and organizational transformation. We don't dabble in incremental change but enable individuals and organizations to make dramatic progress towards their bold goals.
Tell us about yourself
I got started nearly 40 years ago when I woke up one day with the restless notion that I was supposed to be 'up to something with my life, and what I was doing certainly wasn't it. That began a quest that continues to this day. I am on the hunt for more and more effective ways to enable people to express their natural, engaging human spirit. What drives me? Simple - there is nothing more rewarding than seeing the look in someone's eyes when something that they had previously thought was 'impossible' becomes their new reality. There is that moment of awe in their eyes when they realize that what they thought of as the limitations of life only existed in their mind.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
We have been at this for nearly 40 years. I would say that in and of itself is a big accomplishment. We have survived recessions, restructuring, the death of partners, divorces, and all of the drama and challenges that have come our way.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The old adage that it's lonely at the top is all too true. There are just some conversations you can't have with the people in the company, so it's essential to have some trusted advisors.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't listen to tips - they are all useless.
- See #1
- Real transformation isn't about tips and techniques. Its the result of focused intention and a proven methodology for development. You can't run a business on tips, slogans, and motivational pablum. Learning is the development of new competence, a new capacity for action. While your mind understands things, and understanding can occur in an instant, in the end, it is your body that learns, and your body only learns one way, and that is through practice. No amount of understanding ever produced competence. If you want to build a business, you need to develop some consistent, effective practices for learning, leadership, and management. That is the only way to succeed.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Today the world is a place of constant change - it's going to be that way tomorrow as well, so if you wait for the 'right time to make your move, you will be waiting for a very long time. The world won't wait for you, so get off the sidewalk and into the parade!
