Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kristen Mandala, Founder of The Greener Good, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Greener Good is a social media page and consulting agency that strives to remove barriers between those who may not have previously felt able to participate in sustainable action by forging a connection to the natural world around us. The Greener Good is built on the idea that there is no one way to be sustainable and that in order for us to succeed, we all need to be a part of the movement forward. Our customers range from students to adult professionals who are looking to make a positive difference.
Tell us about yourself
I studied International Development at Dalhousie University and continued on to work with non-profit organizations in Central and South America; it was here that I witnessed first-hand the effect the climate crisis was having on Global South communities. After studying Permaculture Design at Rancho Mastatal Sustainability and Education Center in Costa Rica in 2018, I returned to Toronto, struggling to find an effective way to engage with my peers regarding the climate crisis without making them feel judged or overwhelmed.
This led to me creating The Greener Good. The positive feedback I receive regularly is that my approach provided the non-judgemental and open-minded space they needed to make lasting change; comments like this give me the motivation to continue doing what I do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I am really proud of the community I have grown of caring, compassionate individuals who care about the planet and their impact on it.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Maintaining consistency and holding yourself accountable, especially when you work alone. It can be difficult to keep the fire lit, so to speak, so being kind to yourself and setting yourself up for success by knowing what you need is crucial.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Not everyone will understand your idea at the beginning, but that's okay - do it anyway.
- Learn to take feedback and help without taking it personally.
- Don't be afraid to ask for help from your community.
- It's okay to rest!
