Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Francesca Phillips, Founder and CEO of The Good Space, located in New York, NY, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Good Space is a daily email and podcast that makes it easier to feel your best. We focus on the inner world and send recommendations and sell digital products that support your growth and expansion. Our customers are primarily women who want to access their creative, authentic selves daily.
Tell us about yourself
I'd been working in the music industry in Los Angeles, songwriting and assisting some of music's biggest stars in Los Angeles and I felt burned out. This dream I worked years to achieve felt unfulfilling, and I knew I needed change. About six months later, my boyfriend (now husband) got a short-term assignment in Europe. So he proposed, I quit my job, we packed up our things and moved. What was supposed to be three months turned into three years.
That time in Europe was when I started reading every self-development and spirituality book I could. Then I wanted to talk to others about what I learned but didn't know who or where. So that's when I started The Good Space as a blog. A place to share ideas and get into conversation with like-minded people. Then it developed into a podcast and now a daily email.
What I know is we need to access our authentic selves every day to feel grounded and whole. The Good Space is a landing place to do just that. We encourage and support you in meeting yourself as you are and encouraging expansion. As a founder, writer, and podcaster, it's my literal joy to simplify complex principles for easy digestion. I do that through reading books, leading interviews, and doing the research on life's biggest questions, then breaking it down in our emails and podcast.
I'm now a first-time mom, live in NYC, and love pointing out cute dogs with my husband–especially corgis and golden retrievers.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
When people from our community trust me enough to share their deepest thoughts or ah-ha moments after reading one of our emails. Also, our podcast is in the top 10% most shared globally, and we often rank in various podcast charts. It's always fun to get confirmation our message resonates.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The emotional ups and downs. And knowing when to pivot or how to keep things simple. As an entrepreneur, you try to piece together what your audience wants, but a lot of times, it's trial and error.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Make sure there's proof of concept. There's nothing more discouraging than putting tons of time and effort into creating something that no one wants.
- Keep things as simple as possible. Getting caught up in complicated software or systems prevents some businesses from really thriving.
- Stay in tune with what your end goal is. Or with what you feel is right. It's so easy to get caught up in other people's paths or purposes, but yours is unique. Honor your inner knowing, and don't be afraid to carve your own path.
