Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jeremy Grater, Host and Producer of The Fit Mess, located in Albany, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Fit Mess is a podcast aimed at helping people who struggle with depression and anxiety to form small habits for better health but don't know where to start.

Tell us about yourself

One morning several years ago, I injured my knee in an attempt to quickly get out of bed to quiet my dog and keep him from waking my very young daughter. That injury led to physical therapy, where I was told to get on a bike as much as possible or risk the damage to my knees that seems to be hereditary. I took the advice to heart and began bike commuting as much as possible. That nine-mile trip took me on a much longer and more important journey. I found the chaos of surviving the ride to be somewhat therapeutic because I was forced to let everything go and focus on the moment or risk serious injury or worse. Coincidence or not, the next stop on my path to healing was a therapist's office. There I learned to apply what I was learning on my bike to what became a semi-regular practice of meditation, experimentation with Yoga, and eventually, a commitment to make a change.

The changes I've made and continue to make are small. I eat better, but not great. I exercise often but go easy on myself when I can't or simply don't want to. I meditate when I can quiet the voices telling me not to. I go to therapy…a lot. I do all of these things in order to feel better physically and emotionally. I hope that sharing my journey from a knee injury to a lifetime of healing will help you feel a little less alone in your own journey… wherever that may lead you.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Consistent growth over three years to reach and serve more people who feel alone in their struggle to live a happier, healthier life.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The rollercoaster of emotions that comes with successes and failures. It's easy when you feel like you're on top, but it can be a terribly dark grind when things aren't going your way.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Stay focused on the satisfaction of the work. Yes, results are important, but they too often overshadow the joy of the task.
  2. Ask for help. You may be the first to have your idea your way, but many others have learned hard lessons for you and are willing to help. Always seek help.
  3. Outsource your weaknesses and build on your strengths. Better to have 10X your superpowers than to be average at everything.
