Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dawn Conder, Owner of The Face Naturalist, located in Naples, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I launched The Face Naturalist in 2021. As a certified Face Yoga and Gua Sha Instructor, I customize, create, and teach programs using unique holistic techniques that are natural and effective solutions for more radiant and youthful skin. I am passionate about empowering women to love the way their face looks and feels at any age.

Tell us about yourself

Before kids, I was a pharmaceutical rep selling antibiotics. With this background, I was very aware of the indirect side effects of certain chemicals in the products that we trustingly purchase. After 20 years of red flags, from personal fertility issues to watching several friends get diagnosed with breast cancer and losing my aunt and mom to cancer, these facts began to not sit right. This was enough to scare me into making radical changes in my family’s diet and lifestyle.

But when my daughter had an almost anaphylactic reaction to the ingredients in drugstore makeup, I began to connect the dots. I started to really question what I was putting ON my body…as much as IN my body. This was the beginning of all things skin, ingredient safety, natural anti-aging practices, and eventually becoming accredited to teach others these amazing holistic self-care practices.

Nothing fills my cup more than being able to help others concerned about the signs of aging implement intuitive skincare and natural techniques for glowing skin and for renewed confidence.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Although I am proud to have been an opening speaker at a wellness convention, featured on a podcast, and hired to teach Face Yoga Sessions at Miami Swim Week 2021. I consider meeting with Florida Senator Rubio’s aide in 2020 to ask for support on the Cosmetic Reform Safety Act as one of my biggest accomplishments.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the toughest parts of my job is working with so many women dealing with cancer and chronic health conditions. But it is also one the most rewarding parts to not only help them create a more holistic lifestyle but also regain confidence.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be willing to take a risk. There will be triumphs and failures in life and business. But taking the chance and putting in the hard work is always worth the opportunity to learn, serve, and find your true passion!
  2. Honor your commitments. Be on time and do what you say you are going to do.
  3. Get creative and be willing to pivot to meet market demands.
