All Things Sweet - The Engineer's Bakery

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Omotunde Odiri, founder of The Engineer's Bakery, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Everything cakes - Wedding cakes, Birthday Cakes, Anniversary Cakes, etc. My customers are people who love classy cakes that also taste amazing! I hope always to add a little sweetness to everyone's day!

Tell us about yourself

With the start of the pandemic, I had a lot of time on my hands and was trying to figure out what to do with my time. So I took up baking cakes. Seeing customers happy with their cakes and getting feedback (compliments/constructive) motivates me to keep going and do better.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Figuring out how to price my cakes. One of the biggest challenges I faced.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Working round the clock. Owning and running a business is a lot of work. You only get to find out once you start. It does get better over time, though!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Start now; there is never the "best time" to start.
  2. Make peace with the possibility of failure/making mistakes. It is how you learn and grow.
  3. Learn to delegate. No man is an island.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Favourite quote: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
