What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a coach for service-based business owners who have 10-75 employees. What does that mean?!?! Everyone is a "coach" these days, so let me provide just a little context. Most of us small business owners start our businesses for two reasons: we're awesome at what we do, and we have dreams - dreams about the lifestyle we want and/or the impact we can make if we can make our business happen!
My customers are expert builders, acupuncturists, massage therapists, hospitality providers, counselors, autobody technicians, HVAC technicians, architects, electricians, and plumbers who are working to make that dream a reality, and they've had some real success. They've hired their first ten employees. They've found a way to do 750K-1M+ in annual revenue. But they're not living that lifestyle they dreamed about. In fact, they've never been busier, and most of their time is spent answering employee questions and fixing employee errors. These business owners don't have time to do what they need to be doing to grow the business, and they definitely don't have time to enjoy the things they thought their business would create the time and money for. Here's the secret no one is talking about.
Being awesome at your trade, service, or craft doesn't mean you're going to be a great leader of 10+ people you hire to expand the reach of that awesome trade, service, or craft. And when you're not a great leader of people (your employees), you can only scale so far until you hit a wall, which can be a rude awakening for many business owners who were enjoying the wave of success... until they're not. What felt like a success now feels a whole lot like growing expenses, stalled revenue, stalled or shrinking take-home pay, and less free time.
I work with my business owner clients so they can feel successful again. We find out what's in the way of their people (employees) performing in a way that'll free up the owner, and then we go to work getting that stuff out of the way. My clients have become masterful in the art of Minimalist Leadership. By the time we're through, my best clients have doubled their take-home pay, doubled their revenue, and made their teams so effective that they have more free time than they've ever had.
Tell us about yourself
Burnout is what had me start my business! I have been working in management consulting with Fortune 50 brands since 2008. It was late 2017; I was working 80 hours a week and dealing with what many would call a toxic work environment. I eventually left in June 2018, took six months off, and got started in January 2019. What drives me every single day is making a real difference for the people I work with. Something that they'll never get over.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Having my clients double their revenue and double their take-home pay within one year of working together. Partnering with those clients to make that happen was incredible. What did that make available in their lives? Vacations. New homes. First-ever home offices. FREEDOM.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Learning how to expand beyond the great service that I already know how to provide. Being a business owner is so much more than being an expert at the thing we offer. We have to become experts at finding new people to serve, managing our financial performance, and countless other things, and those have been brand new skills for me to learn.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Are you willing to tell everyone what you're up to and to ask them if they or someone they know would be willing to buy or have a conversation about buying what you're offering? If you're not, don't start the business.
