Building a World That Sustains - The Eco Incubator

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in sustainability but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anne Alexis Alexander, Founder of The Eco Incubator, located in Winterville, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

At The Eco Incubator, individuals have the opportunity to engage directly with sustainable living practices by renting or visiting our site and permaculture landscape to destigmatize concepts around sustainability and immerse in wellness activities that reduce the impact of stress, anxiety, and depressive episodes. Any adults interested in alternative eco-friendly, affordable living and holistic healing methods are welcome to visit our space to explore and heal.

Tell us about yourself

As a mental health coach, spiritualist, and food as medicine practitioner, my career path and life journey took me across five continents, teaching me resourcefulness, resilience, the secrets to happiness, and how to live a life of abundance and purpose. The Eco Incubator is the sum of what I have learned. We empower others to live lives of less debt and more prosperity, where health and wellness are a part of the norm and not a reward for greed. We believe that everybody deserves a life of abundance and an opportunity to thrive.

I lived abroad for nearly 20 years studying and honing my skills in areas not open to exploration in the USA, like plant medicine, holistic healing modalities, and unique culinary applications. Abroad, I emerged myself in the study of the mind, body, and soul connection, allowing my truth to guide me to the here and now.

After attending high school and college in Athens, GA. I felt overlooked and undervalued. I knew I had more to offer than what the traditional community would allow me to give, and I knew the “rat race” and repetitive lifestyle spouted as the path to the American Dream wasn’t for me and wouldn’t allow me the freedom to explore my power or purpose. I received two degrees from UGA, studied at Le Cordon Bleu Paris and London, receiving a Grand Diplome, Mastered in Mental Health Counseling, and continued my education in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, becoming certified as a Holistic Healthcare Practitioner and Orthomolecular Nutritionist (fancy talk for food as medicine). But, these pieces of paper don’t define who I am. I am defined by the choices I have made, and you will be too.

The knowledge and skills of self-healing, preventative medicine, holistic health, and environmental respect are needed now more than ever as individuals and policies aim to stunt our growth as a society, hold us back from social and emotional advancement and stalemate our technological achievements with archaic practices that directly cause the degradation of our quality of life as well as our environment.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Everday as a business owner, I meet a new great accomplishment. Every day I am setting new trends and being the change I want to see, making my environment a reflection of me rather than reflecting it. I am the first person, first female, and first African American to accomplish all of the things that I have here, and I am just getting started.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I would say the hardest thing about being a business owner is the acquisition of sustainable financial support systems. Our work is all about innovation and alternative aspects of living. There is a strong element of education required for us to be able to move forward, which leaves me wearing many, many, many hats.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Know your asks.
  2. Choose something you are passionate about.
  3. Know how and be willing to ask for help.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

We are transitioning to a new way of living in a new world. The job market, economy, and idea of work are all changing and look different than ever before. Excelling at business requires you to maintain flexibility and meet your target demographic where they are. Be open to allowing flexibility in not only your business design but even product and delivery.
