Food-focused Trips and Experiences - The Eating Expedition

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Morgan Sinclair, founder of The Eating Expedition, located in Houston, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Eating Expedition is a travel company that hosts food-focused trips and experiences around the world! We take being a "foodie" up a notch by creating adventures centered around farms, factories, food trucks, fine dining, and first-hand experiences. Our mission is to cultivate spaces and conversations that explore the origins of the foods we love and the cultures they create while providing access to adventure and education.

We envision a community of travelers who are craving food-focused experiences and positive talk around food. We aren't here to yuck each other's yum!

Tell us about yourself

Hey there, I'm Morgan Sinclair - registered dietitian and founder of The Eating Expedition. My journey with food-focused travel began in 2014 when I studied nutrition and food science in Northern Italy. Four weeks, fourteen cities, twenty foodies, and copious amounts of wine enjoyed in vineyards and parmesan cheese consumed in the company of ParmaLatte red cows. Yeah, it was just as dreamy as it sounds. And it clearly didn't stop here. In fact, I pitched the idea to four dietitian friends to go to Portland, Oregon, with the #1 goal of visiting the Tillamook Cheese Factory (spoiler: they said yes!).

Food is vital to our everyday life, and each time we interact with food, it allows us to create a connection with other humans and cultures. Much of my time is spent exploring my hometown of Houston, Texas, on the hunt for really good-tasting food, but also experiences and stories!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

After being delayed because of the pandemic, I'm hosting my first trip in September 2022, taking a small group of travelers on a food-focused tour of Northern Italy for ten days! Getting to see this dream come to life has been the biggest accomplishment by far.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Navigating running a travel business during a pandemic. I originally had a trip planned for October 2020 and obviously had to cancel that. I started to get antsy in 2021 and hosted a few food-focused experiences in Houston when it felt safer to gather in small groups, but I don't think anything will compare to a full-on trip!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

OH love this question. My first tip would be to figure out who your ideal audience is - the people that just light your soul on fire and that you just ~vibe~ with. It's okay to get really specific because the more you know about your ideal client, the more likely it is that you're going to speak their lingo. Which leads me to my second tip - list out your ideal audience's pain points exactly how they would say them (not how you envision them!) and speak directly to those when you're creating marketing material. Lastly, make sure you show up somewhere online so that you can be found! Clients are more likely to trust you if they can find you online as proof that you're legit.
