Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kashif Khan, CEO of The DNA Company, located in Mississauga, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are pioneering the future of personalized wellness. By decoding the human genome, we believe the chronic disease can truly become a choice. In our work with professional athletes, celebrities and executives, we have built a database of insights that now allow the average health seeker to optimize themselves.
Tell us about yourself
I do not come from the industry. As a serial entrepreneur, I pushed myself, abused my body, and got sick. It was in that journey that I was disappointed by the results of conventional medicine and sought out the latest technology to get better. I discovered by unlocking my genome and understanding how to read my human instructional manual, I no longer needed to mask a series of seemingly unrelated symptoms but instead support the core systems that lead to illness. I walked away from my business, invested into what now is The DNA Company.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As an outsider working on a biotech business without the science background, I am able to bring a new perspective that allows us to grow exponentially by thinking about how to best solve people's problems instead of how to confine ourselves to the norms. We have now generated a lot of investor interest and are working on an IPO at an early stage.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The faster you try to grow, the more friction you are going to experience, and so you have to be ready for pain. Transitioning from "problems" to "problem-solving" is a difficult mindset to adopt because things mean so much when it's the business you are building. Meanwhile, if you can learn this unique skill, you will build faster and easier.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Your business isn't what you make, serve or sell - It is the problem you solve for your customer. Everything you do should be from that perspective.
- Build your team fast, and don't be afraid to spend on good people. Hire who you want to be, not who you currently are. ROI is explosive.
- Your idea is probably bigger than you think. Don't confine yourself to a small context. Work where you are at, but build for a much bigger place you can be.
