Elevate Your Artistry - The Dance Project

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adrienne Baumer, Owner of The Dance Project, located in Valles Mines, MO, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I own a dance studio called The Dance Project in Farmington, MO. My customers are families with young dancers ages 18 months to 18 years!

Tell us about yourself

I began dancing at the age of 3 and quickly fell in love with the art of it. I danced throughout my whole life and professionally for a few years before switching to teaching. When I was presented with the opportunity to open The Dance Project, I couldn't turn down the opportunity to start my own studio to cultivate artistry! I fell in love with teaching the next generation of dancers & that is the biggest motivation for doing what I do. I love working with kids and their parents, helping them to create their own dance journeys and careers just like I was able to.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We opened our studio at the end of 2019, with 2020 being our first official season. During the thick of COVID, we were still able to grow our studio and not only survive the pandemic but actually learn to thrive during it! Each kid that dances for me and grows up with me is an accomplishment for me and my business as well.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The workload! Making sure that you still have a good family/life balance while trying to grow your business. Doing all of the work makes it an over 24/7 type of job - and it's hard for people to understand that you also have a life outside of your business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

First, stay consistent! Success is not linear. We still stumble & fail often
you have to learn to pick yourself up and consistently keep going.

Second, invest in marketing. We live in a world full of marketing, and it's one of the most important things you can invest in.

Third, be true to yourself and be passionate about what you're doing! If you don't have the passion to get through the tough stuff, or times you make no money, or rude customers - you won't be able to continue; it will burn you out so quick! Pick a business you are passionate about and are able to withstand anything that comes with it.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart! If it is a path that is calling you, be brave and go for it but keep that in mind. Owning a business is hard and so rewarding!
