Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Terri Finbow, founder of The Daily Grind Nutrition, located in Dartmouth, NS, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I serve clients 100% virtually through my private practice, The Daily Grind Nutrition. In my practice, I help women living with anxiety and depression navigate how their food choices, dietary patterns, and lifestyle behaviors impact their mental health and how their mental health plays a role in their food choices and behaviors. I meet my clients where they are in their mental health journey, and, together, we establish a functional nutrition care plan to help them restore wellness to the body and mind.

Tell us about yourself

I am a registered dietitian based out of the small province of Nova Scotia, Canada. After losing my first full-time dietitian job to the pandemic, I conceptualized and launched my practice in the midst of COVID-19. I always saw myself going into private practice; I just didn't imagine it would be so soon after starting my career! It didn't take me long to narrow down a practice niche either, as mental health and wellness is a subject I have held near and dear to my heart for a long time.

The body of research on the diet-mental health relationship has been growing rapidly over the past decade, and it is incredibly fascinating to me, as I have seen its effects personally on my own mental health journey. Getting my practice up and running was not an easy endeavor, but knowing the profound impact that food and nutrition can have on mental health outcomes and symptoms of mental illness is what kept and keeps me going.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Teaching myself how to run a business! The accredited dietetic program I went through as a university student taught me nothing about running a private practice. This was a tough pill to swallow because being a solopreneur, you wear many hats, and I had to learn to do it all - accounting, marketing, project planning, etc. Luckily I stumbled upon Jan Ditchfield and The Dietitian Success Center. I would have been lost without Jan's Side Hustle Academy Course and The Dietitian Success Center's business membership!

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Right now, one of the hardest things about being a business owner and solopreneur is that it gets lonely! You don't have anyone in the office with you to share stories, bounce ideas off of, or ask for guidance. My husband gets the brunt of this, and I am so grateful for his patience!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Clearly define your audience and narrow down your market niche so you know exactly who you are serving.
  2. Get a handle on your imposter syndrome and perfectionism early on because it will certainly hold you back.
  3. Find a buddy or a group of like-minded individuals who will both cheer you on and hold you accountable.
