Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Cross, Founder of The Cross Legacy, located in WA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business, The Cross Legacy, was founded in order to share my knowledge about food preservation, reducing food waste, and sticking to a grocery budget. I have been doing these things in my home for years, and it wasn’t until during the pandemic that I realized there was a need for others to be able to do these things as well. The Cross Legacy started as a website with a blog. Then it expanded onto all of the major social media channels. I wrote an eBook which is a bestseller on Amazon, called I Bought It, Now What? where people can access information about how to preserve over 50 food items. I have a course, The Grocery Solution, which teaches people to save money on groceries. There are several modules with videos, information, and printable items that allow them to work through some of the steps that I follow to save money on groceries. My customers for both the book and the course are primarily women and most likely moms, who are doing the cooking and grocery shopping for their homes. They are the ones who want to stick to a budget or find ways to prevent food waste. While I have a global audience and can sell my products worldwide, about 70% of them are in the United States.

Tell us about yourself

I’m Amy Cross, founder of The Cross Legacy. I currently run a suburban homestead and grew up in the farming community. I have been blessed with such a wealth of knowledge when it comes to food preservation and cooking that I know others can benefit from. Our family deals with many food allergies, and cooking from scratch is not only something that I enjoy doing but also a necessity to accommodate those allergies. As a speaker, author, and influencer, my goal is to be able to share this knowledge with others in order to empower them to feel confident in the kitchen while also saving money on groceries by reducing food waste.

I am motivated by the fact that every day when I show up and share information, I am changing lives. I get messages from people who share how much money they are saving and how much healthy food their family is eating because they are now following my tips. I know that the information that I am sharing is incredibly valuable, and I want everyone in the world to be able to hear it so they can make these positive changes in their lives as well.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As a business owner, my biggest accomplishment is knowing that I am helping families around the world. What started as pictures from my fridge has turned into nearly a million people each month viewing my social media and learning from me. It makes me so happy to know that I am able to help people save money and be able to reduce the food waste in their homes.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner is finding funding and bringing in money. It can be challenging starting from scratch and having the pressure to honor commitments to other people. It takes a lot of work and selflessness.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

If I was giving advice to someone looking to start a business, the first thing I would say is that you need to always keep the customer at the front of your mind. They are who you are creating the business for, so I always make sure that in my decision-making, I am thinking about them and how what I am doing serves them.

Next, remember that you are a servant leader. As a boss and business owner, be the best employer you can be. I believe that I should always be working as hard as my employees. I do not think you will be successful if you assign all of your work to other people and are not willing to do any work yourself. I think it’s important to be willing to show up and work hard as a good example for your employees.

Lastly, keep your mission and your why at the center of what you do every day. Remember why you wanted to start your business and use that as motivation in your day-to-day activities.
