Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food services but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Kelly Huddleston, Owner of The Cookery Houston, located in Houston, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I like to say that at The Cookery, the cooking class meets dinner party. We offer hands-on cooking classes, where everyone works together to create a three-course meal that is then shared by course family-style at our large custom-built table. Our studio space was designed to make you feel like you are in a friend’s kitchen. In our small group setting, the variety of meals we prepare together is a relaxing and positive escape from stressful times.
Tell us about yourself
My love for cooking, entertaining people, and teaching others is what got me started working on my business. Growing up, my mom was always hosting exotic dinner parties for friends and family. As an only child, I was always “employed” as her sous chef. Being introduced to so many different cuisines at such a young age sparked a desire in me to try new foods and to travel to experience even more foods in their country of origin.
While traveling, I always make a point to attend cooking classes, which has helped me to become an accomplished cooking instructor. I also love to entertain and started The Cookery to teach people how to cook the same way I learned – in an intimate setting where the focus was on creating a positive experience and sharing it with others. The positive feedback I receive from our guests is what keeps me motivated.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment is that I have been able to operate two Cookery locations and open a 3rd here in Houston in these incredibly challenging last three years.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Supporting my staff members and dealing with challenges not seen before.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Have a strong business plan, sufficient financial backing to last months, if not the first year, if your growth is slow, and that most days your work is enjoyable and rewarding.
