Career Reinvention for Moms - The Career Counter
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lee Cristina Beaser, Founder and career coach of The Career Counter, located in Torrance, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Career Counter primarily helps moms and mid-career changers take the next step in their careers, whether changing fields, re-entering the workforce after a career pause or lay-off, or finding a new job. I am passionate about helping people find happiness, balance, and fulfillment in their careers.
Tell us about yourself
Ironically, I never planned to start my own business. My dream was always to publish a book. Several years ago, I was trying to get a career book published. I simultaneously started a blog to boost my following and help secure a publishing contract. I quickly realized that publishing a book is harder than it looks. I decided to focus my efforts on building my blog and creating career resources for moms re-entering the workforce, which is what I was also experiencing personally at the time.
One of the things that motivates me every day is knowing I am really helping people. Whenever I get a note from a client who landed an interview, or someone whom I've helped with taking their career in a new direction, I feel a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment to date is making a profit in my business. There have been many times I've wanted to throw in the towel and give up. But I've worked so hard for three years and just continued to put my head down and do the work. To finally see everything start to pay off is a pretty great feeling.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for me is having boundaries. I work from home, so it often feels like I literally never stop working. I have clients emailing me late on Friday and early on Sunday morning, and it's tough to set limits on how available I choose to make myself.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Be patient and enjoy the process. If your only goal is to make a quick fortune, and you don't enjoy the process of starting your business, you will give up pretty quickly.
- Don't let other people define what success looks like or means to you. For example, you will be successful when your company is making $1M per year. You have to celebrate the small successes along the way, like writing your first blog post or selling your first product.
- Be prepared to fail. A LOT. Try to learn from all your failures. Don't wallow. Take stock and ownership, and then move on.
