Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in leadership development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Pierre Quinn, CEO of The Cardell Group, located in Laurel, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I lead a management consulting firm that is focused on supporting an organization's leadership and talent development efforts. My customers include c-suite leaders who are looking to assist their people with assessing their strengths, fostering healthier work culture, and building dynamic professional networks.

Tell us about yourself

I have a background in both theology and higher education. During my theology studies, someone asked me if I had ever thought about public speaking or corporate training. A few years later, I secured a speaking engagement on a college campus. From there came other opportunities to work with corporate and nonprofit teams. I grew up working in the family dry cleaning business, so entrepreneurship is in my blood. One of my big goals is to build a company that my daughters would be proud to lead one day.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

One of my biggest accomplishments has been the ability to hire my friends and fly them across the country to collaborate with me on training engagements.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Building systems and company awareness can take time. Maintaining courage and confidence in what you're doing-especially early on, is very hard. Surrounding yourself with great peers, mentors, and coaches is the cheat code for success.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Learn how to sell. It's a core skill that every business owner needs to learn
  2. Learn how to connect. Networking is a superpower than unlocks many doors.
  3. Ask for feedback early and often. Hidden in quality feedback are the seeds of next-level success.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

There are parts of my business that I love. Speaking on stage, coaching leaders, and facilitating training programs get me fired up. There are parts of my business that I don't love. Most of the administrative tasks drive me wild. You don't have to be in love with every aspect of your business in order to execute well. In fact, success in the boring parts gives you the leverage to succeed in the areas you love the most.
