Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in career and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jamilla Phillip, founder, and CEO of The Business Gym, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Business Gym is an online platform that helps entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs learn about building and growing a business. The online classes and live coaching provide the tools and support needed to take an idea from idea to income.

Tell us about yourself

My name is Jamilla Phillip. I am a Psychotherapist by day business owner by night. I'm the owner of The Business Gym, and I've been an online business owner since 2010. I specialize in helping business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs turn their ideas into income. I started The Business Gym as a resource for my community to learn about the importance of owning your own business, building your own brand, and working towards financial freedom. I'm really good at breaking down business concepts into simple, practical action steps that will move your business in the right direction toward consistent income. My goal is to continue sharing business resources with those who are interested in turning their ideas and passions into six-figure businesses. I just love when a new business comes to life. That's what gives me purpose, seeing someone give birth to a business.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is definitely being able to say that I've shared entrepreneurship skills with over 1000 students. I hope to get to 2000 by the end of the year.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is learning to turn off your perfectionism. It's so easy to get caught up in making sure everything is perfect before you launch - but that type of mindset will have you sitting on a brilliant idea for years. I try to teach our gym members that "done" is better than "perfect."

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

One, stop getting in your own way. We get so caught up in having all of our ducks in a row that we scare ourselves into taking the next level. You have to step outside of that comfort zone - that's where the money is.

Two, your business is just that - A BUSINESS. When you start making money, don't go spending it on frivolous things. You can make double (and even triple) your original earnings when you reinvest them back into your business.

Three, don't forget to educate yourself regularly. Entrepreneurship is a constant revolving door of continued knowledge. What works for you today may not work for you tomorrow. Make sure to dedicate some time every month to learning about new techniques in marketing, sales, and branding. The Business Gym membership is perfect for entrepreneurs looking for ongoing education on business growth.
