Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Adam McDaid, Co-Founder of The Burnt Coffee Company, located in Seattle, WA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Our business is a Seattle-based coffee shop. We work with a coffee roaster and supplier who provides us with our requested Tanzanian, Ugandan, Kenyan, and Ethiopian coffee beans, which we sell online at www.theburntcoffee.com and serve at our Seattle storefront at 3232 15th Ave. W, Seattle, WA 98119.
Our customers are Seattle residents who are passionate about great coffee and interested in coffees of East African origin, which is the birthplace of coffee.
Tell us about yourself
We love to learn and grow and be examples for our children and community. Seattle is passionate about coffee, and we quickly embraced this upon relocating to Washington. Our motivations grow more and more along with our passions, and we are always learning ways to improve and share our stories with others.
We are also very proud to partner with Jacob and Cheru, which allows us to highlight not only our Sudanese and American influence but also Kenya. Our storefront represents our family and our coffee origins through various artwork and displayed African artifacts.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our biggest accomplishment was the ability to build a partnership and sponsor Seattle Pacific University, and we recently began serving our coffee in Woodin Creek Kitchen and Tap and Redmonds Bar & Grill.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part of being a business owner is balancing passion with the bottom line. It's a business, so you always need to seek profit, but profit cannot get in the way of quality or customer service. We strive to stay true to our passion and our customers.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Our top 3 tips are:
- Start a business that doesn't feel like work; make it something you're passionate about and enjoy.
- Never compromise quality.
- Don't be afraid of failure. Be confident, and learn from those around you and from your failures.
