Integrated Wellness Is Our Priority - The Brain Center
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in healthcare but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with April Krowel, Ph.D., HSPP, Founder & a Neuropsychologist of The Brain Center, located in McCordsville, IN, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I own a private group practice that provides comprehensive neuropsychological and psychological services, including testing, individual, group, couples, and family therapy, and psychiatric medication management. Our clients and patients are humans who experience mental health conditions that affect their daily functioning. As a practice, we are also affirming veteran, neurodivergent, and LGBTQA+ clients.
Tell us about yourself
My journey began with 9/11- I joined the Army shortly after and was deployed to Iraq in 2003. When I returned, we lost a couple of friends to suicide, and my educational trajectory changed almost immediately. I knew I wanted to help fellow veterans! Fast forward to when I finished my postdoctoral fellowship in August 2017. My husband encouraged me to take a risk to start a solo practice. It grew quickly, and I hired my first employee in May 2020, in the middle of COVID. And now, I have two locations (looking for a third) and serve a diverse group of clients. What keeps me motivated may sound cliche, but it truly is helping my patients.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner would be creating a culture that is psychologically healthy and balanced for my employees. And I am able to provide a comprehensive benefits package!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Being with my patients is what I love, and having to take time away from them to do administrative tasks is difficult at times. And having to wait for growth to happen when I know there are so many people who need/want help.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Plan - I spent one year planning how I wanted my practice to operate, how much it would cost, how to build business credit, etc.
- Cultivate relationships - Work to network and maintain relationships with people from every sector and help connect them when you can.
- Balance - You can't do everything right away, and that's okay.
