Connect, Create & Cultivate - The Botanist
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meaghan Cameron, founder of The Botanist, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
As a new business, I'm still growing my clientele! I hope to attract people interested in connecting with others, the planet, and themselves through plants, art, and creativity.
Tell us about yourself
My roots are hairdressing, and later in life, I got into martial arts. I started competing and really started to learn some self-discipline. This helped me to actually connect with the people, planet, and myself. This philosophy helped form my vision and mission statement for "The Botanist." It may be a weird connection to most, but over 20 years of working with people as a stylist, it started to connect everything!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I have had partook in business adventures in the past unsuccessfully. I am happy to say that I am the sole owner of my new company. I have defo had help, but I'm still the no one force behind the business!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
My biggest fears were money and the city. I always worry about money because ever since I was little, I never had much of it, LOL. I've heard so many horror stories on delays with the city, and that was in the back of my mind thinking about delays which would lead to more MONEY issues! The other thing I can say is the volume of work that needs to be done, a good thing I work quickly.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
If you truly have an idea for a business you think would work- DO IT. We only have one life to live, and I think it's important to know you at least tried and failed, then to never to have tried at all.
Being organized from the start is great too. I think this helps all the boring stuff like taxes and p & l's (profit and losses) to just get in the habit of doing the boring paperwork. The last would be prepared to give a lot/all of your time in the beginning, but focus on when you can start to take time for yourself. Owning your own business means you have to work a lot; however, you still deserve and need a day off!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
I really think it's so important to go for things in life. It may not work out, but in the end, you will be much happier knowing that you tried to go for your epic business idea/venture than never having tried at all! See it, believe it, achieve it.
