Finding the Right People - The Blue Collar Recruiter

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in recruitment but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Troy Latuff, Owner of The Blue Collar Recruiter, located in Austin, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

The Blue Collar Recruiter Mission is simple. We help find top talent for business owners who operate in skilled trades. We help skilled tradespeople find new and better opportunities for themselves. And we help people that want to start a great new career in the trades – learn a trade and land a job quickly.

Tell us about yourself

I've been in the skilled trades space for over 20 years. First as an employee, then as an owner, and now as CEO of The Blue Collar Recruiter. I quickly learned that people are the key to growing a profitable service business. I know that finding and recruiting GREAT people is HARD to do. That's why I put together The Blue Collar Recruiter team. We are very good at connecting top-tier talent with great companies. And helping new people easily get into the trades through our Virtual Trade School. We love helping bring good people together and are willing to do the heavy lifting for you!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am most proud of my team. I have been blessed to be surrounded by a group of people who are passionate about what they do. It made my job easy. They LOVE to help people find better career opportunities, ultimately changing their lives for the better. My team always has a smile on their faces, and they are always eager to help everyone else on the team when they need help... that's what I'm most proud of.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The toughest thing about being a business owner today is the learning curve. I have always found it beneficial to be a "sponge" from other entrepreneurs. Join organizations that have ways to collaborate with others so you can learn from other people's successes and failures.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be ready to work harder than you've ever worked before.
  2. Make sure you have the capital to cover your personal expenses while your business ramps up.
  3. Be picky about who you hire. It is critical (especially in the beginning) to find people you like and trust. In many cases, you will spend more time with your team than your family. So to find people that see your vision and want to be a part of it long-term will make your life a lot easier and more productive. And you will have a lot more fun along the way!

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

If you are generous with your time and money. Good things will come your way.
